The Renaissance of Modern Menswear with the Theory of ChineseFlower Arrangement
The ideal Masculinity in the 21st century is those successful businessmen wearing suits as their armour. Men are considered emotionless, accurate machines in a bureau, suits seem to be a symbol of being professional, it covers the natural curve of
the male body, and hides any human traits. How is this stereotype developed? When tracing back to history, the second world war is a time when "Irony Masculinity" is pushed to an extreme, and still influences how we consider a true man until now. The designer decides to choose the military jacket of WW2 as a breakpoint.
Yuzi applies the theory of Chinese Flower arrangement in the development of
silhouette.“断其筋,留其⻣.”This means when adjusting the branch, we only break the inner sinew of it, but leave the bone (hard skin) straight so that the branch would show a natural curve. She analyses the internal structure of the monocotyledon stem and then deconstructs the patterns with the theory. Then she
develops the silhouette into the whole collection.
